Description

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is one of the most racially diverse campuses, though students report issues recognizing other forms of diversity. One grad student tells us that, "UHM is very diverse and great with ethnic/racial diversity but not much else."

Although the campus is not large -- an able-bodied student could walk from one end of campus to the other in less than 20 minutes -- one physically disabled student reported that there wasn't enough time to get to classes. For Tue-Thu classes, a student typically has 15 minutes between classes, but for Mon-Wed-Fri classes, a student may have as little as 5 minutes to get to their next class.

More than one student reported waiting over a month for an initial appointment with psychological counseling services on campus. One student said, "I've attended several universities in multiple countries and UH's psychological services were the worst of any that I've attended. It's a horrible, underfunded, under-equipped department."

Another student says, "I felt that therapy wasn't always readily available or even offered. Long waiting lists and limited sessions."

UHM has one of the better websites we've seen in regards to supporting students in distress. The administration does not encourage members of the community to report other students, but rather offers guidance (some helpful) and resources to refer students to support services on and off campus.
